Does my child need feeding therapy?

A feeding disorder is characterized by difficulty with any step in the feeding process. It can develop at any age and results in atypical eating and drinking skills/behaviors that affects a child’s overall growth, nutrition, health, social eating skills, and family dynamic.

If your child presents with any of the following red flags, a feeding/swallowing evaluation is warranted:

Frequent gagging or choking Food/liquid coming out of the nose Inability to transition from purees to solid pieces of food2 Rashes or eczema associated with foods
Frequent vomiting Extreme crying and food refusals Complete avoidance of a particular texture or sensory property of a food Breathy, hoarse, or wet vocal quality after eating
Difficulty latching to the breast or bottle Arching during or following feedings Poor coordination of swallowing and breathing Congestion after eating
Poor weight gain Chronic constipation Repeated respiratory infections or pneumonia Long meal times
Frequent coughing when eating Inability to transition from breast/bottle to purees Mealtime power struggles Difficulty chewing
Pocketing food Feeding tube dependence Overstuffing Gastrointestinal disorders resulting in difficulty eating
Sensory processing difficulties with sensitivities to the sight (color, shape), smell, texture (touch), and taste of foods. Refusal to sit at table around non-preferred foods Metabolic or absorption disorders Swallowing food whole

Getting Started

Before you can schedule an evaluation you need to:

  1. Obtain a prescription from your pediatrician/gastroenterologist for feeding evaluation and treatment and the appropriate diagnostic codes.
  2. Send your insurance information for verification.
  3. Fill out new patient forms.
  4. Call 561-571-7557 to schedule the evaluation.

About Our Program

The Pediatric Feeding Institute of South Florida (PFISF) specializes in the evaluation and treatment of children with various feeding and swallowing disorders using sensory, behavioral, and oral motor approaches as appropriate.  We are committed to implementing innovative methods to address complex feeding disorders to ensure positive outcomes that generalize to the natural environment and are long-lasting. We provide treatment for infants, children and adolescents with feeding and swallowing difficulties/disorders frequently associated with gastrointestinal disorders, food allergies/intolerances, prematurity, oral motor dysfunction, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, cleft lip/palate, failure to thrive, various syndromes, feeding tube dependance, sensory integration disorders, structural abnormalities (i.e. tongue tie) and cardio-respiratory conditions.
